LINC Principal Preparation Program Redesign

In spring 2011, legislation was passed that changed the principal certification from a K-12 certificate to a P-12 certificate, making Illinois the first in the nation to certify principals across the span of P-12. As a result of this legislation, all principal preparation programs in Illinois will be required to incorporate new content and field experiences that integrate early childhood education and other new content areas such as special education and English Language Learners. By 2014, all preparation programs must have been approved by the Illinois Teacher Certification Board under the new program criteria or face being shut down. For more information about the program redesign efforts in Illinois, please visit the Illinois School Leader site by clicking here.

LINC Project staff will provide technical assistance to principal preparation stakeholders in Illinois in 3 ways:

  1. Provide technical assistance to a consortium of 4 Illinois universities in their redesign process
  2. Provide technical assistance and resources to build statewide capacity to developing a comprehensive system of P-12 leadership development programs across. This will involve working with representatives from state agencies who oversee the program approval process.
  3. Conduct awareness and outreach efforts to scale and sustain leadership development across the state.
